Fans attending Thursday's first round of the Wells Fargo Championship will have to get up early to watch the premier groups. The Wells Fargo, played at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., begins at 7 a.m. ET, with television coverage on Golf Channel beginning at 3 p.m.
Thursday morning's most star-studded threesome -- Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and Nick Watney -- starts from the 10th tee at 7:40 a.m. North Carolina native Webb Simpson, along with playing partners Sergio Garcia and Bill Haas, immediately precedes them at 7:30, also starting at No. 10. Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore, and Scott Brown tee off on the first hole, also at 7:30. Japanese youngster Ryo Ishikawa starts from the first tee at 7:20, while bomber Gary Woodland begins his first round at 8:00 on the back nine.
The afternoon features two top groupings. Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, and Angel Cabrera play in one of the most entertaining groups ever at 12:55 p.m., beginning on the front nine. Lee Westwood, Lucas Glover, and Zach Johnson follow them at 1:05.
A pair of foreign-born players who now make Charlotte their home are participating this weekend. Zimbabwe-born Brendon de Jonge tees off at 12:25 p.m. on the first hole. Robert Karlsson, a native of Sweden, plays from the 10th tee at 7:20 a.m. Johnson Wagner, originally from Texas but currently residing in Charlotte, starts on the back nine at 7:50 a.m.
