2013 NASCAR at Talladega Superspeedway weather forecast: Rain showers threaten

Rain showers are a threat to both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series races, but will Mother Nature allows us race? The "NASCAR Weatherman" Meteorologist Brian Neudorff looks at this weekend's weather forecast.

The weather forecast for Talladega Superspeedway this weekend has been a very complicated one. I started looking at this forecast back on Tuesday and since then it has changes so many times I gave up keeping track. Basically we are going to be tracking rain this weekend for both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup races.

As of 12:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, a slow moving band of rain showers was located over central Mississippi and moving slowly east. This rain is a concern for the morning and possible afternoon on Saturday. Rain will arrive across central and eastern Alabama Saturday morning. This large north south band of showers will slowly push east during the morning and into the afternoon. Current information has rain still over Talladega Superspeedway between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.CDT (2 to 4 p.m. EDT) If this were to hold true then there could be a delay to start the NASCAR Nationwide race that is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT (2 p.m. CDT) The rain is expected to push out during the afternoon so a late start to the race is possible.

Will NASCAR get the Nationwide Race in Saturday afternoon? This is a tough one, because it all comes down to when the rain will end and exit over Talladega Superspeedway. I am not very optimistic that this system is out of here by the time the race starts. Some of the recent trends from computer models have the rain lingering even into the evening. I am going to be optimistic and say we will get the race in but it will be delayed.

Sunday an upper level storm system will move right over Alabama. The day will start off dry but cold, with morning temperatures in the 40s. By the afternoon widely scattered rain showers are likely across eastern Alabama. While we don't know the time of any particular rain on Sunday, a shower is possible to threaten and cause delays for the Sprint Cup race Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will be cold as highs are only in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees.

Are we looking at a Sprint Cup washout? These kind of weather scenarios, it's impossible to tell. Delays and red flags due to rain are very likely Sunday afternoon. When you combine cold air associated with this upper level storm, you have a recipe for scattered rain showers. I give the odds of a NASCAR Sprint Cup washout at 50/50. I see scenarios where it could go either way at this point. There will be a lot of short term weather forecast over the weekend. As I have said in the past,it won't be the rain you see on radar that is the problem but the rain you don't see or the rain that has not formed yet.

This will be an ever changing weather forecast so follow me on Twitter @NASCAR_WXMAN and like me on Facebook for the latest weather updates.
