Abner Mares stepped up in weight to take on WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in the featured undercard bout of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero card. The fight was hyped by many as having the potential to be fight of the night and a possible fight of the year contender.
Both men came out confident in round one, with Mares looking to box, staying on the outside and picking spots to engage while Ponce De Leon stalked and landed some hard punches. Ponce De Leon was also able to land some nice power punch combinations.
While Ponce De Leon was cracking at times, it was Mares who scored the big combo in round two that sent PDL to the canvas. Ponce De Leon was able to get up ad get to his corner and make it out for the third round.
Mares continued his solid effort throughout the fight, boxing on the outside and avoiding the power shots of Ponce De Leon while mixing in his own solid power shots.
Mares landed another big shot in round nine that dropped Ponce De Leon. PDL was able to get to his feet but Mares unleashed a torrent of punches as his foe leaned back on the ropes. After a few solid shots landed in the flurry it was the call of referee Jay Nady that Ponce De Leon was not fighting back and defending himself as he waived the fight off.
Mares remains undefeated with the TKO win, running his record to 26-0-1.
