Dodgers-D'backs brawl: MLB suspensions issued

Stephen Dunn

Eight individuals received suspensions for their actions during the brawl.

Major League Baseball took time on Thursday to announce the disciplinary actions the league will take regarding the brawl that occurred earlier in the week between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Five players and three coaches were awarded suspensions while four additional players received fines.

Ian Kennedy received the harshest punishment as the Diamondbacks starting pitcher received a 10-game suspension for throwing a pitch towards the head of Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke after both teams and managers had been warned by the umpires.

The other suspensions include Arizona infielder Eric Hinske getting served with a five-game suspension for leaving the dugout and for his actions during the brawl. Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell, utility man Skip Schumaker and hitting coach Mark McGwire received lesser two-game suspensions for their actions. One-game suspensions were also issued to Dodgers infielder Ronald Belisario along with Dodgers manager Don Mattingly and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson.

The players and coaches listed above will all receive fines in addition to their suspensions. Greinke, Yasiel Puig, Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra were also fined an undisclosed amount of money.

The players can appeal the discipline, but the coaches are all scheduled to serve their suspensions starting Friday night.

Earlier this week, MLB announced that these two teams would open next season together in Australia. On Wednesday, though, Dodgers reliever Ronald Belisario commented that the hostilities are not over.

UPDATE: The Diamondbacks disagree with MLB's decision making and are expected to appeal, Jesse Sachez of is reporting:
