2013 MLB Draft results: C Nick Ciuffo selected by Rays with No. 21 pick

USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays selected C Nick Ciuffo with the No. 21 pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. The 18-year-old backstop is believed by some to be the best all-around catcher in the draft class.

The Tampa Bay Rays have selected catcher Nick Ciuffo out of Lexington High School in South Carolina with the No. 21 pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft.

Matt Garrioch of Minor League Ball believes that Ciuffo may be the "best all-around catcher" in this year's class. Ciuffo, 18, not only boasts a strong arm, but also has the potential to hit for both average and power from the left side of the plate -- a rare commodity in catchers. He batted .468/.562/.723 with five home runs in his senior year, striking out just six times all season.

Ciuffo can get a little pull-happy in the box at times, according to ESPN, but his sound swing mechanics should allow for him to receive the proper adjustments once pro coaches get a look at him. Conor Glassey of Baseball America writes the young backstop has received some negative marks from scouts for bringing a little too much intensity to the field -- Brett Lawrie comes to mind. But he has also received high praise for his strong work ethic, the Sporting News' Ryan Fagan says.
