The St. Louis Cardinals have selected Gonzaga Bulldogs left-hander Marco Gonzales with the No. 19 pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft.
Gonzales was a two-way player in his three years with the Bulldogs -- splitting time between pitching and playing first base -- but his future is on the mound. The southpaw does not have as high a ceiling as guys like Mark Appel or Jonathan Gray, but he is still considered one of the most polished pitchers in the draft.
Gonzales doesn't blow anyone away with his heater -- it sits between 88-92 -- but he does own arguably the best change-up of the draft class, according to Baseball America, and boasts a clean, consistent delivery. The left-hander also throws a curveball and a slider, which are nowhere near as good as his change-up but are still workable, according to Minor League Ball's John Sickels.
Jason Cole of Baseball Prospectus watched him and noted, "They were late to react and generally off-balance all afternoon."
