NHL free agency: Evgeni Nabokov signs 1-year deal to return to Islanders

USA TODAY Sports

The Islanders will likely have the same starting goaltender as they did last year.

The New York Islanders have agreed to a 1-year deal worth $3.25 million with their starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, according to Arthur Staple of Long Island's Newsday.

After refusing to play for the Islanders upon returning to the National Hockey League, he showed up to play for New York in 2011-12 and was a workhorse for the club, playing in 41 of 48 games this season and starting all six playoff games against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was 23-11-7 with a 2.50 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.

Nabokov, selected 219th overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, entered the NHL in 1999-00. In 12 NHL seasons, Nabokov has a record of 335-207-76, with a career 2.41 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. Nabokov won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2001. He was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy in 2008, and has appeared in two NHL All-Star Games.
