NHL free agency: Valtteri Filppula agrees to terms with Lightning

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Lightning and forward Valtteri Filppula have agreed to terms on a contract.

Unrestricted free agent forward Valtteri Filppula has agreed to terms on a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN on Friday afternoon.

Filppula agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract, that carries an annual average value of $5 million against the salary cap. It was widely reported that Filppula was seeking this contract entering the free agency process. Tampa Bay ultimately met those demands.

Filppula is coming off a season in which he didn't have his best numbers, even when expanded to figure for an 82-game season. In 41 games with Detroit, he had just nine goals and eight assists. That's a dissapointment for player coming off a season of 43 assists and 66 points in 2011-12.

Selected 95th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Filppula has spent his entire career with the Detroit Red Wings. In 483 games, he has 100 career goals and 251 assists. He has 19 goals and 38 assists in 105 playoff games, and won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008.
