Two goals from both Mitch Mallia and Joel Chianese were enough to send Sydney FC to its first pre-season victory, 5-3 over Udinese at the Stadio Comunale Picchi in Jesolo. Trialist Manuel Marschel also scored just a day after the Sky Blues lost 3-2 to Serie B outfit Padova. Udinese fielded a youth side.
Sydney used an entirely new XI against Udinese, though some of the starters in Jesolo were used as substitutes yesterday in Padova. As they did against Padova, Sydney gave up a goal in the first five minutes of the game, and like they did yesterday, answered almost immediately back to level the score. Mallia's volley in the 10th minute got the Sky Blues going as the first of a three-goal barrage in just twenty minutes. Marschel got his goal after a nice turn in the 12th minute and Chianese made it 3-1 on the half-hour after a cutback pass from Ali Abbas.
Udinese scored on either side of half-time, in the 40th and 48th minutes to bring the score back to 3-3 but Mallia's second, this time assisted by Chianese, put the Sky Blues ahead for good in the 55th minute. With sweltering heat and humidity sucking the life out of the game, only Alessandro Del Piero's 80th minute introduction brought much energy to the game's final half-hour. Finally, Chianese added his second, and Sydney's insurance, just before the final whistle to leave the final score 5-3.
Sydney take five days off from games before facing third division Vicenza Calcio on August 13 in Jesolo. Vicenza were relegated from Serie B in May after a 19th place finish.
