A-League announces USA broadcasting rights

Wellington v Brisbane will be the first game to air on FOX Sports 2 - Bradley Kanaris

FOX Sports 2 and FOX Soccer Plus will televise two live games each week for an American audience.

The A-League today announced its plan to televise games in the United States. With changes to the structure of FOX Sports channels in the US, including the elimination of Fox Soccer Channel, A-League games will now be shown on Fox Sports 2 and FOX Soccer Plus. The former channel is available on most American cable packages though FOX Soccer Plus is usually only included in sports tiers or through satellite. Games aired on FOX Sports 2 will be played again on delay on FOX Soccer Plus.

As ever, time difference plays a big role in a very limited audience tuning in for A-League games in the US. For example, the first televised game of 2013/14 is the Saturday October 12 Central Coast Mariners v Western Sydney Wanderers Grand Final rematch. The game kicks off in Gosford at 5:30pm which is 2:30am on the American east coast and 11:30pm on Friday October 11 on the west coast.

The league listed the first eight games to be broadcast live in the US. Here they are with times adjusted to reflect American time zones:

Round 1:

  • Central Coast Mariners v Western Sydney Wanderers (FOX Soccer Plus) - Saturday October 12 at 2:30am ET
  • Wellington Phoenix v Brisbane Roar (FOX Sports 2) - Sunday October 13 at 12:00am ET

Round 2:

  • Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory (FOX Soccer Plus) - Friday October 18 at 4:30am ET
  • Brisbane Roar v Sydney FC (FOX Sports 2) - Saturday October 19 at 5:30am ET

Round 3:

  • Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers (FOX Soccer Plus) - Saturday October 26 at 4:30am ET
  • Perth Glory v Melbourne Heart (FOX Sports 2) - Sunday October 27 at 2:00am ET

Round 4:

  • Perth Glory v Sydney FC (FOX Soccer Plus) - Saturday November 2 at 2:00am ET
