Adelaide United exacted revenge on Wellington Phoenix on Thursday night with an impressive 5-1 rout at the Coopers Stadium. Having lost in Auckland on February 1, the Reds pounded the Phoenix with four goals through the first sixty-two minutes before finally relenting. Jeronimo Neumann was the star of the show with two goals but Fabio Ferreira scored and assisted twice in the comprehensive Adelaide effort.
Wellington finished a strange February where in consecutive games they lost 5-0 to Melbourne Heart at home, beat Central Coast Mariners 4-1 on the road and came crashing back to earth on Thursday night. In addition to shipping five goals, Manny Muscat was sent off and will be suspended next week.
The Reds, who have lost just twice since early December, are now up to third place on goal difference. Meanwhile, Wellington missed a chance to jump back into the top six and remain a point out of a finals position in seventh. Adelaide do not play again until they travel to Brisbane to play the Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday March 9. Wellington host Perth Glory on March 9 back at Westpac Stadium.
