2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships, day 2: Preview of the quarterfinals

The quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships start at 11 (EST) this morning (March 21, 2014) on ESPNU. The winner of each of the 40 quarterfinals becomes an All-American, and many matches have profound implications on the race for a team national title.

SB Nation 2014 NCAA March Madness Coverage

The 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships just got interesting. After freight training through Thursday's first session, three time defending champion Penn State saw four of its wrestlers fall in the tournament's second round. Morgan McIntosh, the Nittany Lion's third seeded 197 pounder, suffered the most shocking loss, losing a 3-2 decision to Virginia Tech's Chris Penny.

It remains to be seen whether these defeats will allow Iowa, Minnesota and a surging Oklahoma State to close the team point gap with Penn State, but the results of this morning's quarterfinals should create a clearer team-race picture.

Complete results for the 2014 NCAA wrestling tournament can be found here. The third session airs at 11 am (EST) on ESPNU and ESPN3.
