Preakness 2014 payout: California Chrome takes top prize

California Chrome had a solid win, picking up the second jewel of the Triple Crown at the Preakness Stakes.

The 139th running of the Preakness Stakes is in the books, with pre-race favorite California Chrome pulling away for the victory. California Chrome now has the first two jewels of the Triple Crown and all eyes will be on the Belmont Stakes in three weeks on June 7.

California Chrome started well and stayed just off the pace, maintaining third place in the same way he did at the Kentucky Derby, before making his move at the three-quarter mile mark. He began to pull away down the stretch, separating from the field by two lengths. Ride On Curlin charged strong, but the lead was too much to overcome.

Aside from an injury scare on Thursday, which caused bettors to panic, California Chrome was a steady favorite at Preakness since winning the 140th Kentucky Derby in a dominant performance. California Chrome was the popular pick among experts and held as the heavy favorite all the way up to race time.

The guaranteed purse will pay out $1.5 million, a significant bump from the previous $1 million. Here are the individual betting payouts below:

Horse Win Place Show
California Chrome $3.00 $3.00 $2.40
Ride On Curlin $5.60 $3.80
Social Inclusion $3.40
