Preakness 2014: Date, time, location and more

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

California Chrome looks to take the next step toward the Triple Crown.

With the Kentucky Derby in the rearview, the eyes of the horse racing world turn to Baltimore for the 139th running of the Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

After a convincing win at Churchill Downs by Derby favorite California Chrome, the annual buzz about a Triple Crown winner is in the air. With a win in Baltimore, California Chrome would be on the precipice of becoming the first horse to sweep the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes since Affirmed pulled it off in 1978. California Chrome was a 5-2 favorite at the Derby and will be favored again in Baltimore.

Held at historic Pimlico Race Course, the Preakness has been run on the third Saturday of May since 1868. The race is a 1 3/16 miles test for 3-year-old colts, geldings and fillies.

Here are the details for this year's race:

Day: Saturday, May 17

Post time: 6:18 p.m. ET (Race 12)

Where: Pimlico Race Course, Baltimore, MD

TV: NBC
