NCAA Baseball Tournament 2014 scores and bracket: National seeds continue to fall

Bruce Thorson-US PRESSWIRE

Florida State and Florida are two-and-done after a wild day of upsets on Saturday.

Before this weekend, only three national seeds had gone 0-2 in the NCAA Baseball Tournament since the field expanded in 1999. Two teams were added to the ignominious list on Saturday, as both the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles were eliminated in shocking upsets.

Florida, the No. 2 overall seed and the champions of the mighty SEC, saw their tournament end with a 5-2 loss to North Carolina. On Friday they lost to College of Charleston, who were considered to be one of the best four-seeds in the tournament. The Seminoles (the No. 5 national seed) entered the ninth inning down 6-0 to Alabama and almost rallied back, putting up five runs in the final frame. The Crimson Tide held them off though, sending Florida State packing a day after losing their opening game to Georgia Southern.

Top-seeded Oregon State became the third national seed to lose on Saturday, getting blasted, 14-2, by UC Irvine, the three seed in the Corvallis regional. The Beavers will face elimination on Sunday against the two-seed, UNLV.

The upsets continued for a few other host teams. South Carolina saw it's 28-game home winning streak in the NCAA tournament snapped by Maryland. Cal Poly suffered a tight loss to Pepperdine and Miami was blanked by Texas Tech.
