Belmont Stakes 2014 payout: Tonalist upsets Triple Crown bid

James Lang-USA TODAY Sports

Tonalist, who came in at 12/1, upset California Chrome's quest for history on Saturday.

For the 37th consecutive year, there will be no Triple Crown winner. For bettors that put their money on Tonalist, that's good news.

Tonalist, who entered the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes with 12-1 odds, upset race favorite California Chrome, demolishing any chance for the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

California Chrome, who came in as the odds-on-favorite at 4/5, finished in a dead heat for fourth.

Commissioner came in second and Medal Count came in third. Commissioner entered with 27-1 odds, and Medal Count came in at 26-1.

Along with the win, Tonalist will pick up a the bulk of the $1.5 million total race purse, receiving $800,000. For second and third place, Commissioner and Medal Count will take home $280,000 and $150,000, respectively. The purse is higher than ever before in 2014. It's up from $1 million, where it had been since 1998.

Below are the individual payouts for bets on each horse.

Horse Win Place Show
Tonalist $20.40 $9.60 $7
Commissioner $23.20 $13.20
Medal Count $13.20

Here are the payouts for specific order bets:

$2 exacta: $348
$1 trifecta: $3,390.50
$1 superfecta: $3,808
$1 superfecta*: $5,728.50

*Because there was a dead heat for fourth place, there are two superfectas available
