Garrett Richards sustained a non-contact left knee injury while covering first base in the top of the second inning during the Angels-Red Sox game. Richards broke to cover first base on the play and crumpled to the ground about two steps from the bag. A stretcher was required to take him off the field, and he was surrounded by teammates and medical staff prior to leaving.
The Angels announced that Richards suffered a left knee / patella injury, and that more information would come after the pitcher was fully examined.

While it is worth holding out hope for the young pitcher, it doesn't appear to be an injury he'll recover from quickly.

On replay, it appears Garrett Richards caught his right spike in dirt, knee buckled and he went down. He's going to be carted off field.

It's one thing when pitchers are blowing out their elbows left and right, but for them to be dropping to do lower body injuries means only one thing. Pitcher Morghulis is real and taking place in front of our eyes.
