Jacquizz Rodgers will be used as more than just a change-of-pace back with the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Mike Smith said after practice Tuesday. The team believes that the 5'6 running back can be an every-down player as it looks to lighten the load on Michael Turner this season.
"Jacquizz is a player that we've got to get him some touches," Smith said. "We found out very early once we got him here that he is not a change-of-pace back. He's a guy who can do all the things that you ask a running back to do. You go out and perform and when he's had his opportunities, he's done a nice job."
Analysis: Rodgers has been one of the biggest recent risers in fantasy football thanks to his play throughout preseason and the confidence the coaching staff has shown in the former fifth-round NFL Draft pick. That said, Turner is still the man in Atlanta, though Rodgers has emerged as a necessary handcuff at this point. Rodgers could be a decent RB2 if Turner is injured, especially in PPR leagues.
