NBA Draft 2013: Which international players stayed in

The 2013 NBA Draft pool got a bit smaller as a late flurry of international players pulled out just before their early-entry withdrawal deadline passed Monday evening.

There weren't many surprises when it came to who stayed in and who hopped out of the draft this year as most of the international names draftniks became accustomed to over the past several months will gamble on their American future. "Most" because Dario Saric, one of the highest-rated Croatian prospects since Toni Kukoc, decided to remain with Croatian club KK Cibona.

Saric was an intriguing entry into the NBA draft, too, as a 6'10 19-year-old that averaged 15.4 points and 8.5 rebounds over 17 games in the Croatian League last season. The lengthy forward was expected to be one of the top international picks, but reportedly sought a guarantee that he'd be a lottery pick if he was to keep his name in the Draft. Saric has a rumored four-year deal with Cibona, but the deal includes an NBA opt-out clause at the conclusion of each season.

Who is staying in

With Saric's departure, the title of best international prospect likely goes to German point guard Dennis Schroeder (scouting report) now that he's decided to stay in the Draft. The 19-year-old guard reportedly opened eyes quickly during workouts with his ball handling skills and speed on the court. Scroeder's been playing in Germany's top pro league for the past two years, allowing him to accumulate quite a bit of big-game experience.

There are scouts that might prefer Giannis Adetokunbo (scouting report) over Schroeder, however, as the aforementioned 18-year-old Greek forward is 6'9 with a long wingspan and plenty of room to grow his game. Adetokunbo is one of the more raw international prospects available in the NBA Draft, but scouts do love his speed -- they just don't seem sure how it will translate to the next level. Adetokunbo averaged 9.5 points and 5.0 rebounds for Filathlitikos -- a team that plays in the second division of Greek professional basketball.

French center Rudy Gobert (scouting report) stayed in the draft, as 7'2 people with 7'9 wingspans and 9'7 standing reaches generally would tend to do. Gobert has a propensity for easy buckets, too, finishing his past season with a 72 percent shooting percentage from the floor for Cholet Basket in France.

Lucas Nogueira (scouting report) from Brazil is another international big man who might find his way into the first round after keeping his name in the draft. The lanky 7-footer burst onto the scene in the U-19 World Championships in 2011 where he was the tournament's top shot blocker per minute, but he elected not to enter last year's Draft. Nogueira averaged just 5.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game for Asefa Estudiantes in Spain, but those numbers were limited by the measly 13 minutes he averaged.

One of the more experienced prospects staying in the draft is Russian wing Sergey Karasev (scouting report). Karasev has a good chance to make a quick impact on most teams because, at 6'7 and 200 pounds, he's known as an above-average shooter with good size on the wing. Karasev averaged 16 points per game on 44 percent shooting for Triumph Lyubertsy, one of the top teams in Russia.

Alex Abrines is expected to end up somewhere in the second round after keeping his name in the draft, too, after averaging 3.3 points for FCB Regal this season, though he was limited to just 10.1 minutes a game and is currently in the rotation as his team battles in the playoffs. Scouts compare him to fellow Spaniard Rudy Fernandez, citing a player with a solid jump shot and range.

Abrines will be joined on draft night by fellow FCB Regal teammate Marko Todorovic as the big man also elected to stay in the draft. The 6'11 Montenegrin center who shares agent Igor Crespo with Abrines, according to Givony, averaged 2.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.4 blocks in 6.9 minutes a game. Todorovic shot 57.1 percent from the floor, and when he got the minutes he generally delivered. When given a season high 27 minutes against FIATC Joventut, Todorovic ended with 12 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Daniel Theis had a solid year with Ratiopharm in Germany's top league and is hoping to parlay that into an eventual NBA career, too, according to his agent. Theis is a bit undersized in his natural power forward position at just 6'8, but he apparently toughs it out for points in the vein of Kevin Love. Theis averaged 6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in 16.5 minutes of play for Ratiopharm this season, shooting 49.6 percent from inside the arc. He wasn't afraid to lob up a three-point shot or two, either, going 17-of-60 from beyond the arc.

Brazilian point guard Raul Neto will attempt to make the jump into the NBA as well. At 6'1, 179 pounds, Neto isn't the largest physical specimen out there, but he is an effective slasher to the hoop and can create high-percentage shots once he gets there. Neto is still a work in progress, however, as he sometimes struggles with his jump shot -- though he shot an impressive 39 percent from three-point range with Lagun Aro GBC in the Spanish ACB this season -- and occasionally struggles with turnovers.

Others that withdrew from the draft (according to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express)

C Louis Labeyrie, France
F Axel Toupane, France
C Mouhammadou Jaiteh, France
F Victor Gaddefors, Sweden
F Linos Chrysikopoulos, Greece
C Nemanja Besovic, Montenegro
C Matias Bortolin, Argentina
F Djordje Drenovac, Serbia
F Marko Ramljak, Bosnia
C Francois Affia Ambadiang, Cameroon
F Adin Vrabac, Bosnia
C Artem Pustovyi, Ukraine
G Bogdan Bogdanovic, Serbia
C Walter Tavares, Spain
C Philip Neumann, Germany

NBA Draft 2013 rumors roundup: Trail Blazers interested in C.J. McCollum

C.J. McCollum might make be a top-10 pick after participating in a private 45-minute workout in front of Portland Trail Blazers' owner Paul Allen and the rest of the front office, The Oregonian reported on Monday.

More: Is McCollum the next Damian Lillard? SB Nation's scouting report

McCollum reportedly interested the Blazers enough that this was the second meeting between the two parties. The Oregonian reported the Blazers met privately with McCollum in Chicago during the NBA Draft combine and Allen took enough interest to watch the workout himself -- only his third this year as the draft rapidly approaches. McCollum was scheduled to have lunch with Allen on Monday as well so that the two could get to know each other.

It's interesting that McCollum has become such a seemingly hot commodity as it was just last year that the Blazers dipped into the mid-major pool to draft Damian Lillard -- a pick that paid off handsomely when he played well enough to become the NBA's 2013 Rookie of the Year.

-- Rumors persist the Boston Celtics have given a draft promise to German point guard Dennis Schroeder (scouting report) and that he will be selected with the No. 16 pick. Schroeder is seen by a lot of scouts as a point guard with tremendous upside. Schroeder is one of the faster guards available and has a huge wingspan, naturally drawing comparisons to current Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo.

Schroeder played two years in the top pro league in Germany, despite being just 19 years old, and if the Celtics draft him as planned, they would have to come to terms with the NY Phantoms Braunschweig on his release to be able to play in the NBA.

-- The Cleveland Cavaliers still aren't certain who their top pick will be. The Cavs are said to be waiting on medical-related answers before pulling the trigger on Nerlens Noel (scouting report) with the top pick. Cleveland could obviously use some serious help on the inside, but this year's draft doesn't necessarily provide the immediate answers teams are looking for as Noel and Alex Len (scouting report) -- the two top rated centers in the draft -- are both recuperating from injuries that have sidelined them throughout the draft combines and workouts.

The Cavaliers will most likely take the full time allotted until the draft to decide what to do. Along with the top overall pick, the Cavs have the No. 19 pick in the first round and the Nos. 1 and 3 picks in the second round.

-- Sergey Karasev (scouting report) denies that he has a first round guarantee, but ESPN's Chad Ford believes the Cavaliers will select him with the No. 19 pick. Since Dario Saric withdrew from the NBA draft, Karasev is likely the best international wing on the board. The Russian forward averaged 16.1 points per game in last year's Eurocup with BC Triumph Lyubertsey and was part of the Russian team that took home a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Ford wrote that if the Cavs go big with their first round pick, it looks pretty likely Karasev heads their way later in the first round.

Hearing strongly that Sergey Karasev doesn't get past the Cavs pick at 19 -- that's why I put him there yesterday. Chris Grant and company were out in force in Vegas. If the Cavs go big with their first pick, Karasev makes a lot of sense.

-- Reggie Bullock (scouting report) may have played his way into a first round pick in workouts after some believed he might've left the amateur ranks a bit too early. Ford sees Bullock being drafted as high as No. 16 and as low as No. 23, but after strong showing at the draft combine and several workouts, the ESPN expert doesn't envision him falling out of the first round. Bullock hopped into the North Carolina Tar Heels spotlight after most of the starting lineup was drafted in 2012. He averaged 14.5 points on 48 percent shooting from the floor, but his defensive versatility helped his name the most.

He was a 6'6, 205-pound power forward in college, but with his 6'9 wingspan will most likely find himself as a NBA wing.

Official World Golf Rankings 2013: Tiger Woods still tops, Harris English in top 100 for first time

Tiger Woods is still the top golfer in the world according to the latest World Golf Rankings. There was hardly any movement in the top 10, actually, with only Luke Donald and Brandt Snedeker swapping spots this week. Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar and Justin Rose round out the top five behind Woods.

More: The world's best will tee off together at Merion.

Harris English, who just took home his first PGA Tour title, moved up 55 spots to crack the top 100 for the first time in his career. English birdied two of the last three holes en route to winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic on Sunday, and although he didn't get a U.S. Open berth with the win, he is now ranked No. 84 in the world. Scott Stallings, who tied for second at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, moved up 22 spots to No. 77.

The lack of movement at the top ensures a star-struck first two rounds of the 2013 U.S. Open at the Merion Golf Club. Woods, McIlroy and Scott, the top three golfers in the world, will all tee off together through the first two rounds of the 113th year of the tournament.

Here is the top 10:

1. Tiger Woods
2. Rory McIlroy
3. Adam Scott
4. Matt Kuchar
5. Justin Rose
6. Luke Donald
7. Brandt Snedeker
8. Graeme McDowell
9. Louis Oosthuizen
10. Phil Mickelson

2013 U.S. Open odds: Tiger Woods still heavy favorite

Tiger Woods continues to be the heavy favorite to win the 2013 U.S. Open at the Merion Golf Club, though the odds for who might finish in second place are pretty crowded behind the fan favorite. The major doesn't tee off until Thursday morning, but Woods leads the pack pretty comfortably with 9/2 odds. Rory McIlroy is one of a few golfers vying for second in the odds as he dropped in line with Adam Scott, Graeme McDowell, Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson at 20/1 when the latest predictions were released.

More: Ernie Els expects low scores at Merion

Mickelson's showing at the St. Jude Classic helped raise his stock a bit as he rode a strong third day to finish second in the classic at 10-under overall, but Lefty has an uphill battle to top Woods -- who is back as the world's top ranked golfer after a two-plus year absence.

Even though the heavily-favored Woods seems to have a solid hold on the course title, he'll need to prove his mettle early alongside a couple of other favorites as McIlroy and Scott are paired together with Woods for the first two rounds of the U.S. Open.

The updated odds for the 2013 U.S. Open are provided by Bovada.

2013 MLB Draft results: LHP Ian Clarkin selected by Yankees with the No. 33 pick

The New York Yankees have selected Madison High School pitcher Ian Clarkin with the No. 33 pick in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Though Clarkin is felt to have top-of-the-rotation potential, the left-hander had a somewhat inconsistent senior year of high school. With what scouts are calling the best curve ball amongst the prep kids, Clarkin's overall stuff still makes him hard to pass up. According to Minor League Ball, Clarkin's fastball tops out at 94 mph and has a breaking ball that embarrasses hitters at 72-75 mph. Clarkin also has solid control of a changeup.

Clarkin finished his season with a 0.95 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings. Clarkin is committed to his hometown University of San Diego.

2013 MLB Draft results: RHP Ryne Stanek selected by Rays with the No. 29 pick

The Tampa Bay Rays have selected Arkansas Razorbacks pitcher Ryne Stanek with the 29th pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft.

Stanek entered the 2010 draft with thoughts of the first-round on his mind, but he ended up slipping down to the third round. Rather then join the Seattle Mariners, Stanek set off to Arkansas to boost his draft stock. He was the lynchpin for the No. 4 ranked Razorbacks, going 10-2 with a 1.39 ERA in 16 starts his this season.

Stanek's repertoire includes a mid-90s fastball that tops out at 97 mph. He also throws an above-average slider and has a curveball that can be tricky to make contact with.

Stanek has a solid grip on four pitches and has top-of-the-rotation upside. He did struggle with command earlier in his senior season, however, and has some odd pitching mechanics, which might cause issues later in his career.

2013 MLB Draft results: OF Hunter Renfroe selected by Padres with the No. 13 pick

The San Diego Padres have selected Mississippi State outfielder Hunter Renfroe with the No. 13 pick in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Scouts have watched Renfroe since his days in high school, but after a couple of lackluster seasons in college, he almost fell off the MLB pre-draft hype list. After rarely playing as a freshman and only hitting .252/.328/.374 as a sophomore, Renfroe clicked as a junior hitting .345/.435/.632 with 15 home runs during the regular season and SEC Tournament. Renfroe switched from catcher to outfield to help his bat and will likely stick with that position at the next level.

As a power hitter with a big swing, Renfroe tends to strike out more often than most. He balances that with a good walk rate, generating almost as many walks (34) as he did strikeouts (39) this season. Even with his recent change of positions, Renfroe held his own in the outfield and has what MLB.com calls a "cannon for an arm."

2013 MLB Draft results: OF Austin Meadows selected by Pirates with the No. 9 pick

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Grayson High School outfielder Austin Meadows with the No. 8 pick in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Meadows is one of two lauded prospects from Georgia, joining Clint Frazier in 2013's top-100 prospects according to MLB.com. Scouts are high on Meadows potential, although he is seen as raw. However, with his 6'3, 200-pound frame, he looks like a 30 home run center fielder that could have a productive MLB career, Minor League Ball's Matt Garrioch writes.

Meadows is a five-tool player and has obliterated the competition his senior year, hitting .535/.633/.930, with 14 doubles, four home runs, 28 RBI and 17 stolen bases.

He reportedly began playing baseball when he was just 3 years old, according to the Gwinnett Citizen, and both of his parents played baseball and softball in college. He also played football throughout most of his high school years, but gave up in his senior season to focus on playing baseball. Meadows committed to Clemson last year.
