A goal in the dying minutes secured the victory for Freiburg and moved them up to fifth place in the table.
Freiburg grabbed a late goal to edge Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 on Sunday. The win moves Freiburg all the way up to fifth in the table, level on points with Mainz and Hamburg. Düsseldorf remain on 24 points, eight clear of the drop zone.
Max Kruse had the first chance of the match after a quarter hour. The forward latched onto a pass from Jonathan Schmid, but he saw his shit clang off the post. Their next opportunity came just before the half. Fabian Giefer denied Johannes Flum's shot, and Cedrick Makiadi's shot was wide of the goal.
Düsseldorf began to take advantage of Freiburg's tactical breakdowns in the second half and nearly scored a few times. In the 55th minute, Martin Latka just missed levelling the score when his header went wide. Oliver Fink thought he had Oliver Baumann beaten, but he missed the goal completely.
Freiburg broke the deadlock with only three minutes remaining. Pavel Krmas got his head on the end of a corner kick from Kruse and put the ball into the net past Giefer.
The winner snaps a three match winless streak for Freiburg, giving them their first victory since returning from the winter break.
