Schalke's good week continued on Saturday with a 2-1 victory at the Veltins Arena over Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The hosts were good early and were led by Jefferson Farfan. He struck the side netting from close range and then smacked a shot off of the post a few minutes later. Düsseldorf then had an opportunity, but Dani Schahin's effort was high.
Schalke finally broke through in the 29th minute thanks to an unusual goalscorer. Farfan's free kick was headed into the middle of the box by Jermaine Jones into the path of Joel Matip. The defender threw his leg out at the ball and knocked it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Düsseldorf didn't do a lot on the day, but they found an equalizer in a spectacular counter. Schahin crossed the ball all the way across the goal to Andreas Lambertz. The midfielder took a touch and crossed it back into the middle of the penalty area to Axel Bellinghausen who needed only a tap-in to beat Timo Hildebrand.
Just as Schalke appeared to be heading to their third straight draw in all competitions, Matip popped up again. The defender was hit by a shot from teammate Andre Santos, and the ball landed at his feet. Matip turned and calmly beat Fabian Giefer for the 2-1 win.
Schalke are now on 30 points, four behind the Europa League places. Düsseldorf are in 13th place on 27 points.
