Lennart Preiss
Greuther Fürth picked up a valuable point at home against Bayer Leverkusen.
New Greuther Fürth manager Ludwig Preis picked up a point in his first match in charge thanks to a scoreless draw against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
Fürth played well from the outset and weren't willing to sit back and allow Leverkusen to dominate the match. They came close to scoring after thirty minutes through Mergim Mavraj. The defender headed Johannes Geis' corner at the goal, but the ball was cleared off the line before crossing the line.
Leverkusen finally started to come alive at the end of the first half forcing big saves out of Fürth. Stefan Kießling was denied twice by Wolfgang Hesl, and Geis cleared a shot by Andre Schürrle off the line with a headed clearance.
Both sides had positive moments in the second half, but neither could find a goal. Ilir Azema and Thomas Pledl came close for Fürth but were unable to beat Hesl. Schürrle and Daniel Carvajal thought they were going to be the ones to bring Leverkusen to a victory, but both were stonewalled by Hesl.
The point is huge for Fürth as they're now only five points behind Augsburg for the relegation playoff place. Leverkusen remain in third place, just a point behind second place Borussia Dortmund and four points ahead of fourth place Eintracht Frankfurt. Oh yeah, they're 18 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
