Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. Bayer Leverkusen: Final score 3-3, Herrmann rescues late point for Gladbach

Friedemann Vogel

A late equalizer from Patrick Herrmann capped a thrilling 3-3 contest between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen.

Borussia Mönchengladbach prevented Bayer Leverkusen from retaking second in the Bundesliga with a late equalizer in a thrilling 3-3 match at Borussia Park.

Leverkusen were the more attacking side early. Stefan Kießling was denied a penalty after a hard tackle by Martin Stranzl, and they had an Andre Schürrle goal ruled out due to offside. Just before halftime, Stranzl would be the first to find the back of the net. Håvard Nordtveit sent in a corner, and Stranzl bundled it into the Leverkusen goal with his shoulder to give Gladbach a 1-0 lead.

The visitors equalized just after halftime. Kießling and Schürrle drew the defenders leaving space for Sidney Sam to strike a shot past Marc-André ter Stegen.

The fans were then treated to three goals in a six minute span. Gladbach retook the lead in the 58th. Juan Arango crossed the ball into the box, and Luuk de Jong headed it in the goal. Then, Leverkusen grabbed two goals in quick succession. Kießling finished a cross from Sebastian Boenisch for his 100th Bundesliga goal. A few minutes later, Schürrle ran onto a through ball from Gonzalo Castro and finished to make it 3-2.

Leverkusen appeared to be on their way to retaking second in the Bundesliga as the match started to wind down. Gladbach would not be denied their point, however, and Patrick Herrmann finished a headed cross from Roel Brouwers with his head to level the match.

The point moves Gladbach closer to the European positions in the table, while Leverkusen remain only one point behind Borussia Dortmund for the second place in the table.
