Mehmet Ekici scored twice to lead Werder Bremen over Stuttgart. Stuttgart have lost all four matches since the winter break.
Stuttgart's downward slide continued on Saturday with a 4-1 loss against Werder Bremen. This was Stuttgart's fourth loss in a row since the winter break restart.
Kevin De Bruyne nearly put Bremen ahead in the 24th minute, but his shot from distance crashed into the post. Eljero Elia had their next opportunity, but his shot was just wide. Bremen took the lead minutes later. Mehmet Ekici managed to deflect De Bruyne's shot past Sven Ulreich for the lead.
Martin Harnik nearly equalized twice in the dying moments of the first half, but Sebastian Mielitz blocked his first header while the second went over the crossbar. They did find their equalizer just after the restart. Christian Gentner's shot was blocked, but Ibrahima Traore scored on the rebound.
Bremen took back the lead at the hour mark. Nils Petersen picked up the ball in the midfield and fed a streaking Aaron Hunt. He put his shot out of the reach of Ulreich for the 2-1 lead. Ekici scored his second goal of the match in the 74th minute with an excellent free kick. De Bruyne scored Bremen's fourth in stoppage time with a shot over the head of Ulreich to make it 4-1.
The win moves Bremen to just two points behind the Europa League places with a big match against Freiburg next week. Stuttgart have fallen to 14th place.
