Bayern Munich vs. Schalke: Final score 4-0, Bayern crushes depleted Schalke

Lennart Preiss

Bayern Munich dominated play on their way to a 4-0 thrashing of an injury-depleted Schalke squad.

Bayern Munich pushed their lead atop the Bundesliga standings to 15 points after a 4-0 thrashing of a decimated Schalke squad. Their 54 points is the most ever after 21 games in the history of the Bundesliga.

Austrian midfielder David Alaba opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Franck Ribery was fouled in the area by Marco Höger, and the left back stepped up to take the penalty. Alaba sent Timo Hildebrand the wrong direction and coolly finished for the 1-0 lead.

At the half hour mark, Bayern doubled their lead. After a foul at the top of the box, Bastian Schweinsteiger stepped up and curled a perfect free kick in off the post. It was 2-0, but there seemed to be no hope for a Schalke squad missing Julian Draxler, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ciprian Marica in their attack.

It was 3-0 shortly after the restart. Mario Gomez laid the ball off to Alaba who shot past Hildebrand. Gomez added the fourth goal in the 63rd minute. Schweinsteiger chipped the ball over the top to Arjen Robben who chested it down before squaring to Gomez. The forward left no doubt with a simple finish.
