Bundesliga 2013, Week 25 preview and fixtures: Schalke host Borussia Dortmund in Revierderby

Lars Baron

The Bundesliga weekend is headlined by the country's biggest rivalry. The Revierderby returns to Gelsenkirchen with Schalke hosting Borussia Dortmund.

This weekend in the Bundesliga features two important derbies. First, Augsburg and Nürnberg will face each other in a Bavarian Derby with an important three points on the line for both clubs Saturday sees the second installment of the Revierderby when Schalke host Borussia Dortmund.

Friday, March 8

Augsburg vs Nürnberg - 20:30 CET / 2:30 PM ET
The Bavarian Derby kicks off our weekend with a massive three points on the line. In the seven matches since returning from the winter break, Augsburg have only lost one match. In that time, they've acquired twelve points and look like they have a chance to rescue themselves from relegation. A win won't pull them out of the relegation zone, but it will put more place between them and the direct relegation place currently occupied by Hoffenheim. Nürnberg will be looking to move even further away from the relegation zone. While three points would be great, Der Club will be satisfied with a point.
Prediction: Augsburg 1 - 1 Nürnberg

Saturday, March 9

Mainz vs Bayer Leverkusen - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ET
Leverkusen haven't won away from home in the league since November 28. They've been on a good run of form with only one loss in their last eight matches, and they're catching a Mainz side that has only won once since the new year. Their last four matches ending all in draws, Mainz has almost forgot what it feels like to win a match.
Prediction: Mainz 2 - 2 Bayer Leverkusen

Freiburg vs Wolfsburg - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ET
Freiburg are definitely one of the surprise clubs of the first half of the season. Their performances have continued to get better as the season has progressed, especially their defense. After conceding 61 goals last season, Freiburg have only allowed 23 goals so far this year. Credit must go to Christian Streich. The manager took over a club in disarray and has led them nearly to the Champions League. Wolfsburg have fallen all the way to 15th place after picking up only one win in their last six matches. Wolfsburg have their work cut out for them to get any points at the Mage Solar Stadion.
Prediction: Freiburg 3 - 1 Wolfsburg

Greuther Fürth vs Hoffenheim - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ET
This match could be beyond awful depending on how adventurous Fürth chooses to be in the attack. However, Hoffenheim has been playing much better as of late since the addition of Heurelho Gomes in goal. The Brazilian goalkeeper has added some stability at the back that was lacking before under Tim Wiese and Koen Casteels.
Prediction: Greuther Fürth 0 - 2 Hoffenheim

Schalke vs Borussia Dortmund - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ET
Schalke will be hoping to repeat their efforts earlier during the season in the Revierderby this weekend against Borussia Dortmund. After struggling for weeks to get a win, Schalke have won their last two matches to get back into the swing of things. They also grabbed a big 1-1 draw away to Galatasaray in the Champions League. However, BVB are a little role as of late. Since being knocked out of the DFB Pokal, they've defeated Hannover in the league and then smacked around Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
Prediction: Schalke 1 - 2 Borussia Dortmund

Bayern Munich vs Fortuna Düsseldorf - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ET
It'll be another game in the Bundesliga, and another win for Bayern Munich. Sorry, Düsseldorf.
Prediction: Bayern Munich 3 - 0 Fortuna Düsseldorf

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Werder Bremen - 18:30 CET / 12:30 PM ET
Bremen have lost three in a row, conceding ten goals in those matches. Thomas Schaaf's side is struggling and have fallen all the way to 14th place in the table. While the goals are coming, their defense has been awful. Only Hoffenheim has conceded more goals so far this season. Gladbach have been consistently average so far this season, and it doesn't seem like it's going to change anytime soon.
Prediction: Borussia Mönchengladbach 2 - 2 Werder Bremen

Sunday, March 10

Hannover vs Eintracht Frankfurt - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ET
Frankfurt have been shut out in their last four matches and haven't put together a good performance in any of those matches. It's about time they get things turned around on the field, and Hannover is the perfect team for that turnaround to happen against. Mirko Slomka's side has conceded the third most goals so far this season and conceded three goals in their last match. Takashi Inui returns to the side this weekend, and the Japanese midfielder will be instrumental to their success. Can Hannover take all three points here? They can, but it'll definitely be an uphill climb for them.
Prediction: Hannover 1 - 1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Stuttgart vs Hamburg - 17:30 CET / 11:30 AM ET
The late match on Sunday is a big match for both clubs. Stuttgart can put to end any chance of falling into a relegation battle and pull closer to the Europa League places with a win. From Hamburg's perspective, a win in Stuttgart will see them push ever closer to the fourth and final Champions League place that belongs to the Bundesliga.
Prediction: Stuttgart 0 - 2 Hamburg
