Stuttgart used two first half goals to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0 on Sunday and put some much needed space between themselves and the relegation zone.
They jumped out to a lead after 28 minutes thanks to an own goal from Gladbach. After Cristian Molinaro was fouled by Patrick Herrmann. Alexandru Maxim whipped in a free kick that Alvaro Dominguez was only able to turn into his own goal.
Christian Gentner made it 2-0 five minutes later. The midfielder broke through the Gladbach back line before scoring past Marc Andre ter Stegen in the 33rd minute. Vedad Ibisevic nearly made it 3-0 just before the half, but he was unable to beat Ter Stegen.
The Swabians are now on 36 points, a full nine ahead of 16th place place Augsburg. Thanks to Eintracht Frankfurt's loss this weekend, Gladbach remain only one point behind the final Europa League place.
