Houston Dynamo vs. Olimpia: Final score 1-1, Dynamo through to the quarterfinals with draw

Bob Levey

A 1-1 draw with Olimpia kept Houston unbeaten at home and sent them through to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Houston Dynamo knew they needed only a draw on the final matchday of the group stage to advance to the quarterfinals, but they didn't think they would have to come from behind to do it. Nevertheless, they are through to the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League after a 1-1 draw with Olimpia that also keeps them unbeaten at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Despite playing what was largely a reserve team, Houston was the better team for much of the match. That included the early parts of the match, but Douglas Caetano put Olimpia in front thanks to a gaffe by Tyler Deric. The Dynamo goalkeeper got caught out of position then couldn't get back in time to corral a 30-year free kick by Caeteno as the visitors took the lead in the 21st minute.

Things got worse for the Dynamo just before halftime when Dominic Kinnear was dismissed from the match for arguing with the officials. Meanwhile, the match was getting nastier and nastier as the fouls and cards began to fly in the second half.

Finally in the 65th minute, Houston equalized and predictably, it was off of a set piece. Even without Brad Davis, the Dynamo got a perfect corner kick courtesy of Nathan Sturgis, which found Andre Hainault. The Canadian's header found the net and the Dynamo were even.

Olimpia's chances were squashed in the 79th minute when Brayan Beckeles was sent off for a second yellow card, effectively ending what was a sloppy, ugly and feisty match, not that Houston will complain. They are going to the quarterfinals.
