Monterrey had already clinched the group, but they still went to Panama and put a beat down on Chorrillo.
Monterrey have won the last two CONCACAF Champions League titles and they used the group stage to show the rest of the competition why they are the favorites to win a third consecutive title. They absolutely destroyed their opponents and after a 6-0 thrashing of Chorrillo on Tuesday, finished the group stage with 15 goals for and none against.
Despite having already clinched first place in their group and a spot in the quarterfinals, Monterrey sent many of their best players to Panama and the scoreline reflected it. They scored in the 11th minutes and from there on, it was all Rayados as they poured it on Chorrillo.
Humberto Suazo was the star for Monterrey, scoring in each half as he continued to ravage Champions League defenses. Dario Carreno, Jesus Corona, Neri Cardozo and Guillermo Madrigal each scored as well in the easy victory.
The easy and impressive victory is a nice change of pace for Monterrey, who were winless in their last four matches. The Champions League fixed that, though, which isn't a surprise considering how well the competition has treated them. Now they are set for the spring's knockout stages, where they will take aim at their third consecutive continental championship, a feat that has only been accomplished once before.
