The Tennessee Volunteers beat UNC-Asheville in the quarterfinals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Thursday afternoon
The SEC's Tennessee Volunteers defeated UNC-Asheville of the Big South, 75-68, Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Three Tennessee players scored 14 points in the win, which makes the Volunteers 2-0 to open the 2012-13 college basketball season.
Vols forward Kenny Hall went 6-for-9 from the floor for 14 points; junior guard Trae Golden got eight of his 14 at the line; and sophomore forward Jarnell Stokes shot 50 percent for another 14, despite fouling out. Tennessee shot 50 percent from the field and 76 percent from the line.
Senior forward Jeremy Atkinson led the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs with 18 points. D.J. Cunningham and Jon Nwannunu both scored 12,. UNC-Asheville shot 52.3 percent but could only connect on 1 of 7 three-point attempts.
Tennessee will play Oklahoma State, who beat Akron, 69-65, in overtime Thursday, in the semifinals on Friday at 10:30 a.m. ET on ESPNU. Asheville plays Akron at 1 p.m. ET on Friday in the consolation bracket.
