The Butler Bulldogs have defeated the nation's top-ranked team. In what was unquestionably the most entertaining game of the year, Butler knocked off Indiana, 88-86, in front of a capacity crowd at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
With the score tied 86-86 and just 2.7 seconds left on the clock, Butler guard Alex Barlow hit a floater in the lane to give his team a two-point lead. The Hoosiers heaved one up from half court as the buzzer sounded, but it fell short as they saw their undefeated season end.
Butler held a seven-point lead with four minutes left, and they were up two possessions with as little as 90 seconds remaining on the clock. A couple of costly turnovers and a game-tying three-pointer from Yogi Ferrell with just 10 seconds on the clock sent the game to overtime.
In the extra session, IU moved out to an 84-80 lead, but the Bulldogs refused to go away. Back-to-back three-pointers from Rotnei Clarke and Chase Stigall gave Butler a brief 86-84 lead, but Cody Zeller quickly responded with a layup to tie the game with 19 seconds left.
One of the key storylines to the game had to be Butler's foul trouble. Stating forward Roosevelt Jones fouled out after putting up 16 points and 12 rebounds. Then, with a little more than a minute left in the second half, center Andrew Smith, who out-worked All-American big man Cody Zeller for most of the day, fouled out.
