Karl Towns, previously considered the top recruit of the high school class of 2015, has committed to Kentucky and switched his classification to the 2014 class.
Towns, a 6'11 sophomore at St. Joseph's Metuchen High School, played for John Calipari as a member of the Dominican Republic national basketball team this summer, facing NBA elites in an exhibition game in Las Vegas just a year after beginning high school basketball. The Piscataway, N.J., native is the latest in a pipeline of New Jersey recruits for Calipari including top NBA picks Kyrie Irving and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Although he still has two years until he plays his first college game, Towns is expected to leave Kentucky for the NBA after his first year at college due to his extremely high recruiting status. His reclassification to the class of 2014 will speed that process up by a season.
Towns also considered Duke, Florida, Michigan State and other programs.
