No. 22 VCU vs. Saint Joseph's final score: Rams hold off Hawks in overtime, 92-86

USA TODAY Sports

VCU needed overtime to get past St. Joseph's after the Hawks blew a chance to win it in regulation due to a key turnover and missed free throw.

The No. 22 VCU Rams avoided an upset on Thursday night, squeaking past the St. Joseph's Hawks in overtime, 92-86, at the Stuart Siegel Center in Richmond, Va. Treveon Graham finished with 25 points to spark the Rams to a 3-0 start in their first season in Atlantic 10 play.

VCU squandered a 12-point first-half lead, allowing St. Joseph's to get to within six at the break. The Rams briefly reclaimed a double-digit lead two and a half minutes into the second half, but the Hawks fought back to tie the game when Galloway buried a three-pointer with 6:10 remaining.

St. Joseph's took the lead on Jones' three-pointer at the 1:28 mark, and held onto it until VCU's Darius Theus made a game-tying layup with 11 seconds left, after the Hawks turned the ball over and missed a key free throw down the stretch.

Graham, VCU's leading scorer, converted a four-point play a minute and a half into overtime to give the Rams an six-point cushion that held up for the rest of the extra period.

Theus scored 22 points for the Rams, while Juvonte Reddic added 15 points and 17 rebounds. Langston Galloway came up big for St. Joe's in the losing effort, scoring 22 points. Fellow Hawks guard Carl Jones pitched in 21 on 9-of-15 shooting.
