No. 13 Michigan State vs. Wisconsin final: Spartans get road win

Andy Lyons

Michigan State went into Madison and pulled out a tough 51-47 win to stay in first place in the Big Ten.

It wasn't pretty, but Michigan State will take it. The Spartans went into one of the toughest arenas in the Big Ten and escaped with a 51-47 win over Wisconsin.

Neither team could get anything going offensively. Michigan State won with a 38% field goal percentage while Wisconsin finished with a brutal 29 percent mark from the field.

The Spartans won despite getting next to nothing from their post duo of Adreian Payne and Derrick Nix, who combined for only 4 points on 2-of-7 shooting. Instead, Keith Appling and Branden Dawsen took over the game from the perimeter, accounting for almost all of Michigan State's offense with 37 points.

Wisconsin scored only 4 points in the last 7:30 minutes, as Michigan State was able to keep them in the half-court, where they had no one who could create any easy looks against Tom Izzo's fierce defense.

The win gives the Spartans some separation in a tight Big Ten race. They now have a 6-1 conference record while Wisconsin falls to 4-2.
