Kansas State won its conference opener against an Oklahoma State squad that struggles on the road, behind Rodney McGruder's 28-point effort.
The No. 25 Kansas State Wildcats defeated the No. 22 Oklahoma State Cowboys, 73-67, on Saturday afternoon at Fred Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan.
The Cowboys' road woes continue with the loss, as Oklahoma State is now 1-18 in away games during Big 12 play since the start of the 2010-11 season. For a while on Saturday, it looked as if the Cowboys would overcome their problems away from Stillwater. Oklahoma State held a 32-30 lead at halftime, and staved off a strong second half run by Kansas State to tie the game at 64 with two and a half minutes remaining. However, the Wildcats closed the game on a 9-3 run on the strength of Rodney McGruder's three-point shooting.
McGruder finished with a season-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including hitting two key threes to reclaim the lead for Kansas State late in the game.
Marcus Smart led Oklahoma State 25 points and Markel Brown chipped in with 19. Nino Williams came up big in the second half for Kansas State and finished with 17 points off the bench to spark the Wildcats down the stretch.
