Duane Wilson injury: Marquette guard to miss start of season with stress fracture

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The incoming freshman will have to wait a few more weeks for his college career to begin.

Marquette Golden Eagles freshman guard Duane Wilson was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left leg, Jeff Borzello of CBS Sports reported on Monday.

The school announced they expect the injury to sideline Wilson multiple weeks and he will miss the start of the season. The Golden Eagles open against Southern on Nov. 8.

Wilson, who was ranked as the No. 51 prospect in the Class of 2013 by Rivals, was expected to step into the Golden Eagle's backcourt and contribute immediately. He was also supposed to battle junior Derrick Wilson for a starting spot, and receive substantial minutes in the process. Marquette lost their entire backcourt last season when Junior Cadougan and Trent Lockett graduated and Vander Blue declared for the NBA Draft.

According to Anonymous Eagle, the likely benefactors of Wilson's injury will be freshman John Dawson and junior Todd Mayo. Dawson hails from Clovis, N.M. and was a member of the varsity squad his entire high school career. The Clovis Wildcats made the state semifinals in both 2011 and 2012 and won the state 5A championship in 2013.

Expectations are running high for Marquette after the Golden Eagles made the Elite Eight in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The first preseason USA Today/Coaches poll ranked Marquette at No. 17. They were also picked to win the Big East in a preseason poll, securing five first place votes in the process.
