College hoops tip-off marathon: BYU at Stanford

The marathon kicks off with a pretty solid starter in Palo Alto. Both these teams are included in SB Nation's first Bracketology, and both could use a non-conference win over the other as a solid first bullet point on their postseason resume.

If you're still not sold, BYU has Tyler Haws, who should provide as much natural caffeine as any player in the country. He's more than capable of getting this thing started the right way and going for for 30 plus.

For more on matchup No. 1, check out the preview from Vanquish the Foe (BYU).

11:03 - Selfishly, I'm upset that Gonzaga isn't occupying this spot per usual, because The Kennel is always one of the highlights of the marathon. Instead the Bulldogs just put the finishing touches on a 32-point rout of Colorado State that tipped off at 6 p.m. local time.

We're still waiting for the Tennessee women's team to wrap up its win over North Carolina before getting shipped out to Stanford.

11:06 - Also of note, No. 6 Arizona is up on LBSU 44-18 at the break. Freshman stud Aaron Gordon already has 11 points and seven boards.

11:15 - Ok, NOW the tip-off marathon has started.

Worth noting that the guy I both walked in behind and checked out next to at the grocery was continually talking to himself and reeked of weed. We're both mere passengers on a delirious ride.

BYU leads 15-13 five minutes into the first half.

11:20 - BYU's Eric Mika became the first freshman to start a season opener for the Cougars since 1998 when he got the call against Weber State last Friday. He responded with seven points and a huge block that changed the tide of the game. He's got a single point so far tonight and BYU leads, 21-13.

11:31 - BYU's guards have 24 of their 29 points so far. Stanford's Chasson Randle, meanwhile, has 14 of his team's 22 points all by himself. For those who weren't really paying attention to the last two sentences, the Cougars lead, 29-22 at the 10-minute mark.

11:40- It's way too early for statements like this, but I think BYU's guards are going to prove that they're fully capable of playing with Gonzaga's once WCC play rolls around. Inside is a different story, but that's also an issue for the 'Zags. We'll see the third member of that league's power trio (Saint Mary's) a little later.

BYU still on top, 33-28.

11:52 - Mika showing why he earned the distinction we talked about earlier with a great face-up jumper followed by a terrific assist. He's got 9 points and BYU's lead is up to 47-37. Mika's only going to get better...and then he's going on a mission after this season and will be gone for two years.

How do you coach at BYU and not wind up yelling at small children or animals on a regular basis? It has to be just pure frustration.

11:59 - Most impressive aspect of the first half for BYU was that they played most of it without point guard Matt Carlino, who picked up two quick fouls. They still lead 54-46 at the break after a very entertaining first 20 minutes. Stanford's Randle leads all scorers with 16.

12:11 - Not how you win the coveted 2013 tip-off marathon "Best Atmosphere" award, Trees.

12:25 - Cougars don't have any answer for Dwight Powell, who is the type of player who will give them fits all year. He's got three dunks and 16 point, but BYU still leads by 8 at the under 16 timeout.

12:31 - One of the best towel boy performances I've ever seen just now. Ref blew the whistle after a slip and the kid was out there at the scene of the crime in like a millisecond going to work. That's a future Stanford man. His team still trails, 70-61.

12:35 - Carlino and Haws could play anywhere. I think we knew that going into tonight, but this game is really driving the point home. What we didn't know is how good guys like Mike and Kyle Collinsworth are. Weeknight WCC showdowns are definitely going to be worth staying up for once again this year. Cougs by 11 at the under 12.

12:43 - Did you know Tyler Haws was actually Mickey Parke in the fictional by band 2Gether?

That's an extremely esoteric early-2000s MTV reference at 12:45 in the morning on a Tuesday.

He knows his calculus.

That was another one.

12:51 - ALMOST KIND OF FIGHT...or something. There was a shove in there, I think. Officials perform the world's quickest review and decide nothing of any consequence took place.

BYU has totally taken over. It's 91-72 with 6:30 to play.

12:55 - Yeah, Tyler Haws is in the house. Put ya hands in the air cuz he'll make ya bounce.

I've lost control of this thing in record time.

1:05 - BYU has stopped being aggressive on the offensive end, and as a result they're having a little trouble closing this one out. They're still up, 101-89 with 3:16 to go. Randle, Powell, Carlino and Hawks all have at least 22 points.

1:20 - Stanford hangs around a little bit late, but BYU walks away with an extremely impressive 112-103 win on the road. If every game is going to feature multiple triple-digit performances, then we're not going to have much of a problem staying awake, you and I.

It's been a big night/morning for the WCC already, and a bad night for Johnny Dawkins, who will probably already hear a few murmurs (not whispers, yet) after this one.
