College basketball scores: A thriller in Provo and some narrow escapes on Wednesday

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

At times it was too close for comfort, but Ohio State, Iowa State, Baylor and Wichita State all stayed undefeated with wins on Wednesday.

It's not easy to keep an undefeated streak alive, even if it is only November. Several ranked teams were threatened on Wednesday, but they each found a way to pull out the victory and stay perfect on the young season.

Here's everything that happened around the Top 25:

No. 8 Ohio State 63 American 52

The Buckeyes forced 27 turnovers, but could not distance themselves from American, which fought the full 40 minutes. A late 8-1 spurt brought the Eagles' deficit down to nine in the final minute, but Ohio State never let up. Aaron Craft struggled offensively, but frustrated American with seven steals. Amir Williams had 16 points and seven rebounds in the win.

No. 14 Wichita State 77 Tulsa 54

The 23-point difference was not indicative of how close the game was most of the way. The Shockers and Golden Hurricane were tied at halftime before a devastating Wichita State run midway through the second half. Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet both scored 21 points, the highest point totals of each of their careers.

No. 20 Baylor 69 College of Charleston 64

Cory Jefferson had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as Baylor barely held on at home. A 7-0 run from the Buccaneers pulled them within three points with under a minute left, but Kenny Chery made two free throws to seal it in the closing seconds. Isaiah Austin had 16 points and eight rebounds in the win.

No. 21 Iowa State 90 BYU 88

Playing its first game as a ranked team this season, Iowa State staged a late rally and held on to beat BYU despite losing two key players down the stretch. DeAndre Kane was ejected after picking up a flagrant foul 2, then Melvin Ejim fouled out a couple minutes later, giving BYU a shot to win in the final minute. Daniel Edozie blocked what could have been the game-winning shot with four seconds left.
