The California Golden Bears beat the USC Trojans 76-68 on Sunday night, but it was somewhat tainted by an ugly incident on the sideline between head coach Mike Montgomery and star guard Allen Crabbe. With the Bears struggling early in the second half, a heated Montgomery gave Crabbe a shot to the chest as the guard walked to the huddle.
The incident occurred with Cal on the wrong end of a 44-32 score in the second half. Here's a video:
A visibly upset Crabbe headed toward the locker room after the shove, but quickly returned to the court. He responded well, helping Cal get back into the game and ultimately leading them to victory. He finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. He made 8-of-16 shots and knocked down 5-of-11 from 3-point range.
It will be interesting to see if Montgomery faces any punishment for his actions on Sunday night. Making physical contact with a player like that is frowned upon, and Morehead State coach Sean Woods was suspended one game earlier this year for a similar incident. However, it remains uncertain if Montgomery will face retribution.
