Miami's buzzer-beater was almost buzzer-beaten. Alas, the Hurricanes won.
Reggie Johnson tipped in a Miami miss with 0.8 seconds to play, and the No. 14 Hurricanes stunned the No. 19 North Carolina State Wolfpack to win 79-78 on Saturday.
Miami has now won nine games in a row and is 8-0 in ACC play.
The Hurricanes led at 69-67 with 5:20 to play, but North Carolina State controlled the lead for the final five minutes and 19 seconds. A 70-foot heave as time expired was shockingly close for North Carolina State; it rattled around inside the rim twice before bouncing out.
The Wolfpack was without its star point guard Lorenzo Brown on Saturday. He sprained his ankle in the first half of Wednesday's 58-55 loss to the Virginia Cavaliers. He didn't return in that game and was not available Saturday. To fill his void were freshmen point guards Rodney Purvis and Tyler Lewis. Purvis started and had 13 points, and Lewis finished with 16 points and five assists.
Miami finished with five scorers in double figures: Johnson (15), Durand Scott (18), Julian Gamble (16), Kenny Kadji (13) and Shane Larkin (13). Johnson also had eight rebounds, the eighth of which was the game-winning put-back on Shane Larkin's missed mid-range jumper.
