Joe Harris scored a career-high 36 points to lead the Cavaliers, who frustrated Duke from start to finish. The Blue Devils were uncharacteristically whistled for 23 fouls in addition to receiving a technical foul, charged to Rasheed Sulaimon, early in the second half. Harris made both free throws awarded as a result of the technical and hit the ensuing two free throws from the original personal foul to give Virginia a 12-point lead and all of the momentum.
Akil Mitchell added 19 points and 12 rebounds for Virginia (20-8, 10-5 ACC), a bubble team that did itself a huge favor in terms of its tournament resume by pulling off the upset.
Seth Curry scored 28 points for Duke (24-4, 11-4 ACC), who will try to rebound on Saturday against No. 5 Miami.
