With the pretenders officially weeded out, things begin to get really interesting in the Big East Conference tournament Thursday with four quarterfinal games involving the top four seeds.
Here's how things look at the moment.
To review, Cincinnati defeated Providence Wednesday 61-44, covering as three-point favorites; Syracuse, the five seed in the this conference tournament, overcame a slow first half to beat Seton Hall 75-63 but couldn't cover as 14-point chalk; Villanova pulled away in the second half to defeat St. John's 66-53, covering as four-point favorites; and Notre Dame knocked off Rutgers 69-61, holding on for the cover as 7.5-point favorites.
So Thursday the Bearcats run into top-seeded Georgetown (noon ET, ESPN, matchup report); the Orange, in their last Big East Conference tournament before moving to the ACC next season, take on fourth-seeded Pittsburgh (2:30 pm ET, ESPN, matchup report); the Wildcats bang with second-seeded Louisville (7 pm ET, ESPN, matchup report); and the Irish, also in their last Big East tournament before relocating to the ACC, play third-seeded Marquette (9:30 pm ET, matchup report).
In early betting the Hoyas were favored by five points over Cincy, and the Panthers were favored by two points over the 'Cuse.
In the only previous meeting this season between Georgetown and Cincinnati the Hoyas beat the 'Cats 62-55 one month ago, winning outright as four-point road underdogs.
In the only meeting this season between Syracuse and Pitt the Panthers shot 48 percent from the floor in beating the Orange 65-55 back on Groundhog Day, covering as three-point home chalk.
In the only meeting this season between Louisville and Villanova the Wildcats pulled a 73-64 upset over the Cardinals, winning outright as 11-point home dogs.
And in the only meeting this season between Marquette and Notre Dame, two weeks ago in Milwaukee, the Eagles beat the Irish 72-64, covering as six-point favorites.
On updated Big East tournament betting boards Louisville is a 5/4 favorite, followed by Georgetown and Pitt at 4/1, Marquette at 5/1, Syracuse at 6/1, Notre Dame at 10/1 and Cincinnati and Villanova at 15/1.
