The Southern Jaguars will be the heavy favorites in the SWAC title game for the conference's automatic, but Prairie View A&M will hope to complete a run that's taken them past the conference's No. 2 seed.
Southern shouldn't have been the top team in the tourney -- that was Texas Southern, who were ineligible for the tournament -- but they did have a strong year. They went 15-3 behind the league's best defense -- giving up just 85.9 points per 100 possessions for opponents in conference play -- and also had the league's second-best offense, with Malcolm Miller averaging 16.1 points per game and Derick Beltran right behind him at 16.0 points per game. The Jaguars did not struggle in two matchups against Prairie View, holding them to 42.0 points per game in two easy wins.
But don't discount the Panthers, who were right behind Southern's offense with the third-best unit in the league. Jourdan DeMuynck had 37 points in a win over No. 2-seeded Jackson, hitting three three-point shots and dominating from inside the arc as well. He's Prairie View's best player by a wide margin -- 15.7 points per game, with nobody else even in double digits -- so Southern will key in on him.
