Kansas State vs. Kansas final score: Jayhawks win Big 12 tournament title, 70-54

Jamie Squire

The Jayhawks have made a habit in recent years of winning the Big 12 tournament, and on Saturday they picked up another title.

The Kansas Jayhawks defeated rival Kansas State, 70-54, in the Big 12 tournament championship game on Saturday. The tournament title is the sixth for the Jayhawks in the last eight seasons.

Following a sluggish first half, Kansas held a 24-16 lead on the Wildcats. As the scoring picked up over the final 20 minutes, it would be Kansas' offense that carried the day. Kansas State pulled to within three points early in the second half, but from there the Jayhawks began to find their groove and put some distance between themselves and the Wildcats.

Kansas needed a little more than 15 minutes to put up 40 points in the final half, and that was a level of efficiency that KSU could not match; the Jayhawks led by double-digits for a significant portion of the final 10 minutes.

Center Jeff Withey paced Kansas with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and he also snagged nine rebounds. Perry Ellis and Naadir Tharpe also finished with double-digit points for the Jayhawks. Rodney McGruder led Kansas State with 18 points, but did not receive a lot of support from teammates. For the game, K-State shot less than 40 percent from the field.
