Butler advanced to the third round by beating the Bucknell Bison, 68-56, on Thursday afternoon in one of the more entertaining games of the day. The Bulldogs fell behind by six points midway through the second half but finished strong, winning yet another tournament game under head coach Brad Stevens.
Andrew Smith came up large for Butler, scoring 14 points and nabbing 16 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles made their fans sweat like none other on Thursday. Marquette trailed the Davidson Wildcats virtually the entire game, and were down by six points with a little more than a minute remaining. However, the Golden Eagles staged a furious rally behind Vander Blue, who scored five points in the final minute, and Jamil Wilson knocked down a key three-pointer..
Now, the two will square off with a healthy respect for the other. Marquette is more of an outside team while Butler tries to work in the paint, offering a stark contrast in styles.
The Golden Eagles are led by Blue, who averages 14.4 points per game while making 45.4 percent of his shots. Jamil Wilson has an identical shooting percentage to that of Blue, but is a much better three-point shooter, making nearly 37 percent of his attempts.
Rotnei Clarke is Butler's leading scorer, overcoming a scary neck injury earlier in the season to average 16.7 points per game. Clarke is a subpar shooter, but makes up for it by making 88.2 percent of his free throw attempts. Andrew Smith and Roosevelt Jones both score in double-digits and shoot close to 50 percent from the floor with nearly all of their offense coming from inside the key.
