The No. 7 San Diego State Aztecs have an unlikely third-round foe as they'll battle the No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Sunday for a spot in the Sweet 16.
Florida Gulf Coast stunned No. 2 Georgetown, 78-68, in a game that really wasn't even that close. The Eagles used a 21-2 run early in the second half to take a 52-33 lead, and kept a double-digit advantage over the Hoyas until a late flurry pulled Georgetown to within four with less than a minute left. FGCU made six-of-10 free throws from that point on, while the Hoyas were unable to come up with a bucket.
San Diego State used a dominant second half to advance to the Round of 32. The Aztecs trailed Oklahoma by two points at halftime, but outscored the Sooners, 39-22, after the break en route to a 70-55 win. Jamaal Franklin scored 21 points to lead SDSU while James Rahon added 17 off the bench.
Florida Gulf Coast clearly benefited from playing several strong opponents during the non-conference portion of its schedule. The Eagles went 1-3 against those teams, defeating Miami and losing to VCU, Duke and Iowa State. All five teams, including FGCU, made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
San Diego State lost to the two high-profile teams it played early in the season, dropping games to Syracuse and Arizona, but did secure a win over UCLA. The Aztecs went through a gauntlet in the Mountain West Conference, losing seven games but notching wins over Colorado State, New Mexico and Boise State to bolster its tournament resume.
The winner between the Aztecs and Eagles will advance to the South Region semifinal, which will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
