Big South basketball standings 2013: Charleston Southern, High Point secure division titles

Grant Halverson

The High Point Panthers and Charleston Southern Buccaneers each locked up Big South North and South division titles, but the real story is the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, who are the hottest team in the conference after they finished the season on a six-game winning streak.

The Charleston Southern Buccaneers and the High Point Panthers split the Big South regular-season championship, both earning wins on the season's final day to earn the co-championship.

High Point won the Big South North Division title easily with an 12-4 record, four games better than the second-place Virginia Military Keydets. But the Buccaneers needed a win Saturday to clinch the division title and a share of the regular-season overall crown, and they got that win in a 75-64 victory over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Panthers were the only team in North Division to finish with a conference or overall record over .500.

The Gardner-Webb victory over Presbyterian pulled the Runnin' Bulldogs into a tie for second in the South division with UNC-Asheville. Gardner-Webb finished their season on a six-game winning streak, which included wins over both Asheville and Charleston Southern. The Runnin' Bulldogs should be considered favorites heading in to the Big South tournament, despite finishing one game behind the Buccaneers in regular season play. Gardner-Webb also finished the regular season with the best overall record in the conference.
