The top two seeds in the Northeast Conference Tournament lost in semifinals play on Saturday, creating an unlikely championship game between the No. 5 Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers and the No. 3 Long Island U. Blackbirds.
The Blackbirds won the first semifinal game, defeating the No. 2 Wagner Seahawks, 94-82. Long Island shot lights-out the entire game, hitting 65 percent from the field and 56 from behind the arc. Senior guard C.J. Garner led the team with 23 points, while forward Jamal Olasewere scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The 12-point performance gives Olasewere 1,836 points in his career, a Long Island record.
Mount St. Mary's pulled off the second upset of the afternoon, defeating the No. 1 Robert Morris Colonials, 69-60, in the other semifinal game. The Mountaineers used a 12-2 run early in the second half to take control of the game, and stretched the lead all the way to 20 before withstanding a late Colonials run. Rashad Whack paced the Mountaineers with 26 points, while Sam Prescott added 15.
Long Island and Mount St. Mary's will meet in the championship game on Tuesday, March 12. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. ET, with coverage on ESPN2.
