The George Mason Patriots and Santa Clara Broncos will face off in a best-of-three series to determine the champion of the 2013 CBI Tournament starting on Monday, April 1. The first game of the series will take place at Santa Clara with the second game at George Mason on Wednesday, April 3. If a third game is necessary it will also be at George Mason on Friday, April 5. All game will be broadcast on AXS TV.
The sixth CBI Tournament has featured eight of 14 games decided by six points or less. The winner of the Championship Series will join past champions Tulsa, Oregon State, VCU, Oregon, and 2012 champs Pittsburgh.
George Mason was nearly knocked out in both the first and second rounds of the tournament before defeating Western Michigan 62-52 in the semifinals. In the first round the Patriots defeated the College of Charleston 78-77 on a last-second shot. Things didn't get any easier in the quarterfinals as Mason needed overtime to beat Houston, 88-84.
Santa Clara had a bit of a smoother path to this point, but had its own exciting game in the quarterfinals notching an 86-83 upset over Purdue. In the first round, the Broncos defeated Vermont 77-67 and most recently, Santa Clara topped Wright State in the semifinals, 81-69.
The Patriots, out of the Colonial Athletic Association, hold a 21-14 record. They are led by junior guard Sherrod Wright, who averages 16.7 points per game and was dominant in George Mason's first two games of the CBI (he only scored nine in their semifinal victory).
The Broncos hail from the West Coast Conference and have amassed a 24-11 record. They will go as far as senior guard Kevin Foster takes them. Foster has scored 23, 34 and 33 points in Santa Clara's three CBI games and averages 19 points per game on the season.
