Alex Poythress to return to Kentucky for sophomore season

Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

The rich got richer as Alex Poythress decided to return to Kentucky and join an already stacked team.

Alex Poythress will return to Kentucky for his sophomore season, strengthening a Wildcats team that didn't need to get any stronger. The school announced on Tuesday that Poythress had decided to pass on the NBA Draft, ending weeks of rumors that he would leave Lexington after just one season.

Poythress averaged 11.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as a freshman, both of which ranked second on the team, and earned SEC Freshman All-American honors. Some projected that he would be a first-round pick in the draft, which fueled speculation that he would leave Kentucky, but the 6'8'' forward will return to school.

Kentucky will welcome six McDonald's All-Americans to Lexington next season, giving the Wildcats one of the best recruiting classes in recent memory. With those six, along with Poythress and Willie Cauley-Stein, Kentucky should be one of the favorites to win the national title next season and Andrew Wiggins, the nation's top recruit who remains undecided, may still yet pick the Wildcats.

John Calipari will have an absurd amount of talent at his disposal in 2013-14, which he needs after this season's dismal campaign. The Wildcats went 21-12 and missed the NCAA Tournament just a year after winning the national title, then bowed out in the first round of the NIT to Robert Morris.
